Maine Store, ca. 1945
Wood Engraving
The tucked-away store, hidden among the trees, provides residents with essentials for work and life. With no identifiable retail presence, one can assume that this store is frequented by locals only. Depicted from a slightly elevated perspective, Inman chose a composition that did not mimic a perfect postcard image of Maine but, instead, captured the reality of unpretentious life in a coastal community. Inman created this woodblock in 1945, and she and her husband used this print as their annual Christmas card that year.
