Description

This house was built circa 1900. Eagle street was built in 1904 to serve the Sardine factory at the bottom of the bluff, originally there were stairs from Eagle Street right down to the entrance of the factory. The first house at 1 Eagle street was a center hall cape that faced Eagle Street with the gable facing the water. It is visible in the 1920 aerial view with a central door on the long side with two windows flanking it on each side. The current building on the site is roughly 90 degrees to that orientation with the gable facing Eagle Street and the long side facing the ocean. The current building is circa 1900 and is built entirely of salvaged materials, some fire damaged presumably from the great fire. All the interior framing is old roof rafters with the ‘bird mouths’ still visible. It was insulated with cardboard boxes from the sardine factory at the base of the hill, all with their ‘Banquet Brand’ label. It has a formal 5 sided bay window that is emblematic of Eastport that was once in the front parlor, the only room that had hardwood floors, the rest of the rooms just had reclaimed wood. This house originally had two bedrooms on the second floor but it has now been converted to one story living. It does not appear that this house is the same house that was there in the turn of the century but it is a period house so likely was moved from another location nearby- both 7 and 11 Water Street had similar cottages that are no longer extant so it is easy to believe that either of those was moved at some point to replace a house that was lost to fire or neglect.
