Muselenk Place Name Bronze Plaque | 2023Description
Bronze plaque (14" wide by 9" high) for Passamaquoddy place name, Muselenk, with description in English and Passamaquoddy. English wording by Donald Soctomah, director of the Passamaquoddy Cultural Heritage Museum and director of the Passamaquoddy Historic Preservation Office at Motahkomikuk, Maine. Passamaquoddy translation by Dwayne Tomah, director of the Sipayik Museum at Sipayik. Plaque is to be placed in the summer of 2023 on the front of the main building of the Tides Institute & Museum of Art in downtown Eastport, Maine. This is the first time that the Muselenk place name is publicly visible in Eastport and the first time that the Passamaquoddy language is publicly visible in Eastport.
Muselenk
Muselenk is the Passamaquoddy word for Moose Island, known today as Eastport. This is part of the traditional homeland of Passamaquoddy people which extends across the current U.S./Canada political border and includes parts of Maine and New Brunswick.
