CALAIS TEMPERANCE HOUSE, C.1840! Coin silver spoon in our collections that dates to about 1840. It was made by Boston silversmith, Newell Harding. The silversmith maker’s mark with the initials NH are on the back of the spoon as are stamped the words, Calais Temperance House. The Calais Temperance House building in Calais, Maine was built in 1835. By the late 1840s, the house had changed hands and it become known as the American House. Later still, in the early 1900s, the building became the local Masonic Hall. The building still stands on Calais Avenue in Calais.
