LUCY H. KILBY
Eastport—Lucy Helen Kilby, 90, died April 23, 1984 at a Calais nursing home. She was born in Eastport, May 26, 1893, the daughter of Herbert an Harriet (Pike) Kilby.
She graduated from the Eastport Grammar School, attended the Waynefleet School and graduated from Abbot Academy in Massachusetts, graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in 1921, received an M.A. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1923, and took extension courses at Harvard and Boston Universities in 1926-27.
Miss Kilby taught biology at Everett, Mass. in 1926-27 and at Shead Memorial High School from 1921 to 1964 and part time from 1964 to 1968. The library in the new Shead High School is named the Lucy H Kilby Library in her honor.
She was on the Board of Directors of Peavey Memorial Library for many years and an honorary member of the Literary Round Table in Eastport. She attended Audubon Camps in Maine, Connecticut and California and travelled extensively throughout the world.
Survivors include John Pike Grady of Eastport, Mrs. Elizabeth Grady Swaluk of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Lucy Straw Jewett of Shreveport, La.
Graveside services were held at Hillside Cemetery, Eastport, with the Rev. Roland A. Chaffey officiating.
