Model of W.R. Page | Fishing Schooner | Built in Eastport, Maine in 1867Description
Model of W.R. Page owned and repaired by Buddy Trott of Eastport, Maine. Builder unknown.
From Eastport Sentinel, June 19, 1867:
Launched from the yard of C. S . Huston Esq. on the 17th instant a superior clipper schooner, named W.R. Page. In the construction of this vessel no expense has been spared. The dimension s are as follows; Length of keel 70 1-2 feet; breadth of beam 23 1-2 feet; depth 8 feet; burthen 100 'tons, carpenters measure. The frame was selected with much care; the bend and waterways are of white oak; top hacmetac; butt and bilge bolted with copper; composition spikes; trenailed through and wedged with locust. The labor, was performed by the day. The joiner work was done by Joseph Anderson Jr. who is part owner. In fact all the work—sails, rigging, spars and blocks, and blacksmith work—has been done by persons having an interest in the vessel. The building of this vessel was projected by David Perkins Esq., who enlisted in the enterprise a considerable number of our citizens. Mr. W. R. Page of Charlestown, Mass., owner of one eighth of the vessel, and for whom she is named, has furnished an elegant set of colors. The “W.R. Page” is designed for the fishing business, and will be commanded by Capt. James Malloch, a part owner.
From Joyce Emery Kinney. The Vessels of Way DownEast. Bangor, Maine: Furbish-Roberts, 1989, p. 103:
WILLIAM R. PAGE, clipper schooner, 81 tons, built 1867, by C. S. Huston
Dimensions: 83 x 23 x 8, two masts. The newspaper account of the launching gave interesting details about the schooner, apparently no care or expense was spared, and white oak, hactmetac and locust were used in its construction. Joseph Anderson, Jr. part owner, was responsible for the joiner work. All (other?) work was done by day labor and by those having ownership in the vessel.
