Description

GLADYS ATWOOD, C.1930! Large watercolor (29" high and 22" wide) portrait of artist, Gladys Atwood, by her artist husband, George Pearse Ennis, that recently came into our collections. We discovered the watercolor in California. The couple married in 1928 in New York City and the notice in the New York Times was titled “Artist to Wed Artist.” They spent a number of summers in this region in the late 1920s and early 1930s associated with a summer art school here that Ennis directed that was based out of New York City. They had a summer cottage on nearby Meddybemps Lake. In September, 1936 following the end of that year’s summer school session here, the couple were driving in upstate New York and became involved in a car accident. Ennis was killed, but Atwood survived. Without Ennis, the summer art school came to an end.
