Description

PEMBROKE CIVIL WAR VETERAN, 1860s! Photo that recently came into our collections is of a Pembroke, Maine American Civil War veteran. It dates to the 1860s. Housed in a deep 13" x 15" wood frame, the photo came from the former Pembroke Civil War veterans post that shared space within the Pembroke Masonic Lodge building that closed a couple of years ago. There was no identifying information on the photo or frame as to who the veteran might be. We guessed perhaps it was Isaac Campbell — the Pembroke veterans post had been named for him. So we searched the Maine State Archives digitized online collections of nearly 2500 small (carte de visite) photo portraits of Civil War veterans from throughout Maine. We typed Isaac Campbell into the search field and sure enough up came a small identical photo to the larger one that we had just come into our collections: Isaac Campell, Pembroke, Maine, 2nd Lieutenant, 6th Maine Infantry, Company F. He was killed during the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia in May, 1864 at the age of 22/23.
