Description

From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.110: WEST QUODDY HEAD LIFESAVING STATION Originally, in 1873-74, a lifesaving station was built, in an exposed location, at Carry ing Point Cove, on the opposite side of West Quoddy Head. In 1919 this boat station 'Yas built -- a residence, a boathouse arid slip, as well as a garage. Until 1972 the United States Coast Guard maintained it, but next it became a boat building school for Washington County Vocational- Technical Institute in Lubec. When the institute moved to Eastport, this boat station since 1980 has served the West Quoddy Biological Research Station. To combat the famous Bay of Fundy tides, iron and concrete piles support the boathouse and boatways. A low hip roofed square garage, with wooden shingles, two doors for the boats, another door at the rear, and twin two-over-two windows, completes the complex. KFM, JCB
