Description

Temperance banner dating to 1849. 41" x 44" hand-painted silk banner. It depicts a man and his son standing alongside a stream and waterfall. It is inscribed "Border Section, No. 1 C. of T. Presented by Ladies of Eastport, July 4, 1849." The banner is constructed of two panels stitched together with blue fringe on the sides. "C. of T." stands for Cadets of Temperance. Eastport refers to Eastport, Maine. Neal Dow was Governor of Maine where the "Maine Law" banning sale of alcoholic beverages was enacted in 1851. Condition: Two relatively small areas of loss along right side, in the blank field. Scattered spotting and wrinkling. A horizontal split crosses the two figures in mid-section. Framed to an overall size of 47" x 53".
