REAL GOLD OR FOOL'S GOLD? 1898! Nugget of "gold" (attached to the end of a bracelet chain) that was recently donated to our collections. The donor told us that the nugget had been given to her grandfather in 1898 by the developers of the fraudulent project at Mill Creek in North Lubec, Maine in 1897-1898 that advertised that it could obtain gold from sea water there. The grandfather was told by the developers not to invest in the project. Others did invest and lost a lot of money. We haven't yet been able to determine if the nugget is real gold or not.
