Description

From email from Jennifer Spencer (daughter of Lois and Ryerson Johnson), September 29, 2021: My parents were good friends with Wally and his wife Connie Putnam. They did get up to Lubec probably several times. The painting is a self-portrait of Wally on the pond on their property in Yorktown Heights, NY. Was probably done in the 1940s, as that is what Nauman says was his 'ice house period'. They would go out there from NYC during that period, then later moved there permanently. The house was reconverted from an ice house. Since they did live there after the 40s, it could have been done later, but not after early 1950s as I remember it on the wall in the mid 50s (don't remember when that memory started, so could have been there earlier). During the 40s, many of his paintings contained images from their property.
