George Pearse Ennis (1884-1936) | Study for Stained Glass Window | Watercolor and Ink | 1930
Description
STUDY FOR STAINED GLASS WINDOW—GEORGE PEARSE ENNIS, 1930! Watercolor and ink study for a stained glass window in our collections. It's the work of New York City based artist, George Pearse Ennis (1884-1936), and dates to 1930. Ennis was a frequent visitor to this area in the 1920s and early 1930s and directed a summer art school here from 1927 to 1936. Known primarily for his watercolor paintings, he also produced oil paintings and dry point etchings as well as studies for stained glass windows. Among his stained glass window projects were two produced for the Unitarian Church building in Eastport, Maine. These, unfortunately, were destroyed when the church burned to the ground in 1946. We're not sure if this posted study of a stained glass window by Ennis was ever produced and installed in a building. The study was made for the Decorative Glass Studios in New York City.
