Description

-WATER255 G7-0D3-01 Address: 255 Water Street Eastport, Maine 1879 Birds Eye View Map of Eastport shows a mansard roof house in this location. From booklet, 4th Annual Eastport Historic Homes Christmas Tour, December 7 & 8, 2013: The Michener-Tinker House, 255 Water Street, French Mansard style, circa 1860. This home was built by Capt. Abel Michener in what was known then as the North end of Eastport. Capt. Michener tore down a little, one-story "unsightly" house, and replaced it with this elegant two-story French mansard cottage. Around 1870 the house was sold to Alexander Tinker, a boat builder from New Brunswick, and his family occupied it during the 1870's and '80's. The house is similar to a center hall cape, with the mansard style roof providing additional living space without adding a second story (in those days a tax saving, as homes were taxed by how many stories they had). The Italianate-style brackets under the eaves suggest the house was built in the decades immediately before or after the Civil War. The inside has exposed hand-hewn original beams, some original flooring, the original staircase, some of the original doors, and built-ins.
