Name/Title
Stella Sara Henoch (1881-1964) | Buxton House, Eastport, Maine | Watercolor Painting | 1935Description
Watercolor painting of a street of old historic houses such as one would find in the south---think Charleston or New Orleans, measuring 17 1/2" by 21 1/2" (24 1/2" by 28 1/2" in an attractive, hand-carved frame), signed lower right in pencil and dated '35 by artist Stella Sara Henoch (1881-1964). However, upon opening the backing, I discovered penciled information identifying the subject: "Buxton House, Eastport Maine" and "Early colonial house". Internet research shows that the so-called Buxton House in Eastport was built in 1826 and that the mayor of Eastport, one Charles Buxton, lived in it around the year 1900. A historic district in Eastport has been proposed or established, to protect the early structures and the integrity of the neighborhood. There is a town of Buxton northwest of Portland in the southern part of Maine, so, an old Maine name. Colors are rich and not faded. Henoch seems to have had ties to Indiana and Missouri; a relative lived in Los Angeles which may account for the painting having been found here. She seems to have painted in a number of geographical areas. According to findagrave.com, her burial place is LaPorte, Indiana. Condition excellent.
Brief Life History of Stella Sara

ART SCHOOL OPENS HAS MANY STUDENTS
IS ATTRACTING MUCH ATTENTION IN ART CIRCLES—LARGER REGISTRATION—PROSPECTS FOR SUCCESSFUL SEASON GOOD
The Eastport Summer School of Art is now in full swing with classes meeting daily, and the largest registration it has ever shown. George Pearce Ennis, who established the school is in charge, and is assisted this year by Robert C. Craig, Hilton Leech and Miss Janice Truex. Mr. Craig’s presence on the faculty is of especial significance since he will have charge of teacher or normal training—a branch of the school which is expected to develop very rapidly.
The restaurant connected with the school, known as “The Clipper Ship,” opened a day or two before the school itself and under the very competent management of Mrs. MacDiarmaid, is contributing materially to the welfare of the institution. The grounds about the property have been much improved and an awning has been installed at the entrance adding greatly to its appearance and convenience.
To the painting classes this year have been added not only courses in teacher training, mentioned above, but an etching class, the latter equipped with a press of the latest design. Excellent work is expected from it, and samples of the etchings and lithographic prints of the students will be exhibited on the walls of “The Clipper Ship” along with oil paintings and water colors.
The list of students at the Art School this year includes some really notable names and the successes attained in last week’s exhibition by artists who have studied here are likely to be duplicated or excelled next season. Among them, people who are already here or soon to arrive are the following:

The school congratulates Eastport on its many civic improvements, especially as to roads and sidewalks and the generally well-kept appearance of its homes. It finds this an ideal location, limitless in painting material and beauty of surroundings, and is cooperating with the city authorities to make Eastport the most famous art colony on the Atlantic seaboard.
