A colorful ceramic garden gnome figurine in a kneeling position with blouse of yellow layered on white, blue cap and shoes, red pants, grey beard, painted nails. Called a "Welchkin" by donor.Context
I think this was the fall meeting [of Welch’s Grape Growers] of ’85; that would be when Joe and Virginia Simco won him [Welchkin figurine] as a door prize. The Welch’s Grape Growers had a meeting each year . . . and that was it. He was the only one; it wasn’t like they gave a bunch of ‘em; he was it.
We [Candy Odglen and husband Randy] were just really close with them [Joe and Virginia Simco]; they have a daughter and son-in-law who are our age, and we used to get together every night for dinner—so I only cooked once every third night because we cooked together--. We pregnant girls, once we got pregnant, we were walking together. But before we got pregnant, Joe and Virginia really wanted a grandchild. They came home [and] they won this and so they said, “Alright--Whoever gets us the first grandbaby gets the Welchkin. This is a rare and wonderful thing. This is a prize—you all should want [it].”
So we got pregnant, and [our baby] was born in October, and [their daughter's baby] was born I think the following December. So after [ours] was born, here they came wagging him over, and we were like, “No [your daughter] is pregnant; they’re going to give you the grandbaby,” and they were like, “Nope, you were first.”
That was October of ’86 that they gave it to us. . . . They are sweet wonderful people. They’re not with us anymore; they have passed on.
