Scope and Content

Photos, histories, and memorabilia related to the historic Totem Lodge on Burden Lake in the Town of Sand Lake, NY. Totem Lodge began as the summer home of nationally renowned sportsman Matthew A. Larkin around the turn of the 20th century and eventually became a world-class resort beginning in 1922. Refer to the weblinks portion of this entry for additional information regarding the history of Totem Lodge and its predecessors, including the totem pole that graced its grounds from 1904 until 197. The Schoenholt family donated the Totem Lodge totem pole to the Marian E. White, Anthropologic Research Museum, of the University at Buffalo (UAB) in 1978. The UAB subsequently restored the pole and features it as one of its most prized exhibits.
