Scope and Content

Collection of research related to the brief, but eventful, service of noted abolitionist Reverend Abel Brown as the pastor of the Sand Lake Baptist Church in the Town of Sand Lake, NY, from 1841 to 1842. Reverend Brown is credited with helping over 1,000 enslaved men, women and children escape to freedom before he died at the youthful age of 34 years old. Reverend Brown was also the founder and corresponding secretary of the Eastern New York Anti-Slavery Society and traveled widely, publicly preaching the message of abolition, in spite of personally suffering the severe verbal, legal, and physical abuse that his efforts frequently generated. Refer to the Weblinks portion of this entry for an excellent overview of Reverend Brown's contributions by SLHS member and Brown scholar Mr. Peter Finn.
