2021.2.67Scope and Content
Sixty-seven-page PDF of an accounting ledger of an unidentified general store. However, based upon the notes and newspaper article displayed on pages 4 and 5 of the PDF, the store was definitely located in Sand Lake given the customers noted and, most likely, the William H. Snyder general store that once stood approximately where the parking lot of the current Hannaford (formerly Miller's) supermarket is located since Snyder's store began operation in the 1840's and the ledger opens with a zero balance. Other uncertainties include the reason why anywhere from one to several pages frequently appear to be ripped or cut out of the ledger throughout the ledger. Perhaps Regardless, the ledger is an excellent example of commerce in the Sand Lake area from 1840 t0 1853. The PDF is downloadable while fully logged into the system. Refer to the two example pages provided below for the newspaper article mentioned above and a preview of the ledger's content. A much higher resolution PDF is stored off-line and available upon request under the file name:

The original ledger is stored in a locked fireproof safe at Town Hall. As a final mystery, perhaps the William H. Snyder who ran the store was the same Dr. William H. Snyder noted in the 1901 Albany Medial Annals Memorial displayed below and noted in the weblinks portion of this entry since he once lived in West Sand Lake, operated a general store elsewhere, married a Uline, and moved away in the 1850s?Cataloged By
