Scope and Content

Binder storing several compilations of TOSL related historic research that were compiled and donated by someone named K S (Stanley) Buck, donated to the TOSL, and accepted by TOSL Historian Madolyn Carpenter in 1970. Stanley died at the age of 94 and was an active WSL Fire Department member and historian of the Salem United Methodist Church of West Sand Lake. Most interesting is that two of the documents include references of relatively renowned artist and architect William "Rembrandt" Lockwood and renowned former NYS Governor and US Secretary of State and War William L. Marcy having ties to Sand Lake. The Lockwood reference appears to be based upon a December 6, 1910, Amsterdam Evening Recorder Article regarding Reverend Washington Frothingham that recalls Lockwood residing in West Sand Lake. The Marcy reference appears to be based upon a paragraph found toward the end of Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester's 1880 History of Rensselaer County that indicates Marcy briefly resided and possibly taught school in the Taborton area. Refer to the "Publications" folder of this site for more about the Marcy reference. Unfortunately, neither Sand Lake author Andy Mace nor SLHS Curator Michael Perry could locate any additional confirmation of Lockwood's or Marcy's ties to Sand Lake. In addition, the binder stores some 1975 vintage, "then and now," photos of historic Sand Lake hotels, churches, and taverns. These are all SLHS owned items in spite of their apparent donation to the Historian of the TOSL. No explanation regarding why. The following PDF documents are downloadable while fully logged into the system.
