2021.2.61Scope and Content
This entry highlights three diaries that were compiled by Ruth Thomas Miller during the years 1939, 1940 and 1944. As noted below, Ruth was a member of one of the founding families of Sand Lake and married to former Town of Sand Like Supervisor (1942-51) and co-owner of the Thomas Miller Funeral Home, Raymond S. Miller, who was a close confidant of former Supervisor (1927-36) and State Senator (1937-44) Clifford C. Hastings. As a result, many entries at least tangentially discuss Raymond's political involvements, duties, and travels to and from the NYS Senate with Clifford, as well as his frequent mortuary duties. Refer to the excerpt below for more about Raymond and the Notable People folder of this system for more about Hastings. However, most of the diary entries simply describe day-to-day life in the late 1930's to mid 1940's and its gardening, housekeeping, listening to records on the family Victrola, and family, church, and social circles. The 1939 diary is most complete and includes entries for almost every day. The 1939 diary also includes a comical set of handwritten wedding vows. The 1940 diary ends in mid-December and the 1944 diary ends in late July. Refer to the example entries displayed below for a better idea of the content of each diary. The original diaries are locked in a fire-resistant container at Town Hall.Cataloged By
