1876-1881 Librarian's Record Log - Likely for Sunday SchoolEntry/Object ID
2021.2.65Scope and Content
Nineteen-page PDF of a completed copy of the, "New Librarians' Record: Designed to keep the accounts with the scholars by classes using the library order card," which represents an approximately 20% sample of all of the entries in the Record given their rather repetitive nature. Per the example pages shown, this log recorded the library requirements and/or activities of the teachers and students in numerous classes taught by several different teachers in an unnamed Town of Sand Lake, NY, school district or, more likely, Sunday school program from 1876 until 1881 given its publication by the, "American Sunday School Union," and since one entry specifically notes being for a Bible class. Page 7 of the PDF provides at least some guidance to help discern the meaning of the entries and subsequent updates with left and right slash marks. However, they remain perplexingly difficult to understand. An extensive Internet search failed to identify any further instructions or examples of this apparently rather unique record. However, there are references to similar logs being used to track and reward Sunday school participation with library issues or privileges. The words, "Sand Lake Presb," (perhaps Presbyterian?) and the names William A. Shaver, George H. Carr, Philip Lester, and E. W. Learn appear inscribed on otherwise blank pages in the front and back of the log apparently to note their service as the Librarian or Assistant Librarian of the school. Teacher names listed by class throughout the log include: Alice Peck, Fannie Howard, Arthur Peck, Jesse Reid, Mrs. Eddy Huntley, J. B. Peck, Mrs. J. P. Velie (or Veile), Sarah Coll, J. Harriger, Miss D. Clark, Jacob Werriger (or Warringer), Mrs. S. Horton, Mrs. A. Gabler, Mrs. A. Arnsworth, Miss Lotto Lester, Mrs. J. B. Hemmingway, and Reverent J. P. Kittle. However, several of the teacher names are spelled in different ways and are difficult to discern. The PDF is downloadable while fully logged into the system. Refer to the example pages for a preview of its content. A much higher resolution PDF is stored off-line and available upon request under the file name:
