This entry includes:
- A January of 2000 fourteen-page PDF of the articles of incorporation and initial bylaws of the Burden Lake Preservation Corporation (BLPC), which is one of several Burden Lake improvement associations. Burden Lake is one of several tributaries of the Wynantskill Creek and was largely responsible for powering several generations of mills along the length of the Wynants Kills during the 19th through early 20th centuries. A long history of largely commercial agreements and associations artificially controlled both size and flow of both Burden Lake and the Wynants Kill. Subsequent largely residential associations, such as the BLPC, have inherited the unenviable task of being at least partially responsible for the maintenance and safety of aging dams along the Wynants Kill and its tributaries. While these dams once helped power the Industrial Revolution, they've been long since abandoned by those industries. Counties and Towns have further complicated the issue by installing various roadways and utilities along the length of the dams.
- A five-page PDF of a letter from the BLPC to Rensselaer County seeking to assert that the BLPC is not solely responsible for the maintenance and safety of a particular dam due to both the County and Town of Sand Lake having constructed roadways, traffic control structures, and sewer along its length since the dam was constructed. This is just one of the numerous similar issues that must be resolved to prevent a potentially catastrophically cascading dam failure that could send a large volume of water cascading down the Wynants Kill toward Troy.
The PDFs are downloadable while fully logged into the system. Hard copy photocopies of these documents are available in the Town Historian's office. However, they are little or no better than these scanned copies.Cataloged By
