Thirteen-page high-resolution PDF of an 1841-1842 corporate revenue and expense ledger for A.S.L. & S.R.W. Company, which is unfortunately never fully defined in the ledger. Thus, the meaning of A.S.L. & S.R.W. as noted on the spine of the journal remains open to interpretation. Perhaps the abbreviation stands for Averill and Sand Lake Railway or Roadway, or something similar, since the journal notes engineering expenses? However, the top of each page notes, "New York," rather than Sand Lake as its base of operations and includes rent and expense payments for offices located on, "Broadway," presumably in New York City. Regardless, the corporation received investments from, made payments to, and employed a, "whos' who," of prominent Sand Lake residents including Horatio Franklin Averill, James K. Averill, A. R. Fox, W. H. Taylor, A. B. Knowlson, and S. W. Carmichael. While the researcher notes displayed on page 3 of the PDF indicate that the Company continued until 1870, closer examination of the dates in the journal indicate that any 1870 reading results from irregularities in the writing of the number "4" in script between the left and right pages. The number "4," rather than 7 is likely much more accurate given the relatively few pages included in the journal. In summary, this is a truly a fascinating document that deserves further investigation. As noted by the SLHS web site, many business ventures quickly flared and flamed out during the early 19th century and this may have been one of them. The PDF is downloadable while fully logged into the system. Refer to the example page for a preview of its content. The original notebook is stored in a locked fireproof safe at Town Hall.Cataloged By
