Description

Display of artifacts and memorabilia related to the Faith Mills knitted clothing factory, which was a prominent industry located in the Town of Sand Lake, NY, during the late 19th and early to mid-20th century. Of particular note are the memorabilia related to the WWII Army-Navy production award received by Faith Mills as a result of being among the top five percent of all WWII-related defense industries in the United States. Refer to the War Department press release in the Faith Mills folder of this system for additional information. The display was organized by SLHS volunteers solely using SLHS owned artifacts and was initially and formerly located in the foyer/front entrance of Town Hall for many years. SLHS President Jackie Tremont relocated the display from the main entrance of Town Hall to a larger case located in the center of the Town Library in February of 2022. Thereafter, Jackie further relocated the display to the lobby of the similarly historic Young's Pharmacy and General Store in Averill Park, NY, during the Summer and Fall of 2022. As a result, there are three sets of display case photos (one for each display location) with the Young's Pharmacy photos appearing first and photos of the other locations and close-up photos of individual artifacts appearing thereafter. Exactly the same items were relocated with the exception of a quilt on the bottom shelf of the Town Hall foyer display that may have been made from cloth produced by the mill. The quilt was on loan from and returned to its owner during the first relocation. Jackie also appears to have added a few yet to be determined borrowed items to the Pharmacy display. Most recently, Jackie returned the collection to Town Hall for temporary storage in boxes in the Town Historian's storeroom until it can be rotated back into one of the display cases at Town Hall. Refer to the included PDF documents and Internet sites referenced below, other entries stored in the Faith Mills folder of this site, and the following SLHS website address for additional information: https://sandlakehistory.org/faithmls/index.html
