2021.2.72Scope and Content
Thirty-eight-page PDF of a leather-bound notebook that records dog and property owners and related acreage and property values associated with the names of (presumably) residents of the Town of Sand Lake, NY. Dorothy H. Leitgeb donated the notebook to Town Historian Madolyn Carpenter in 1985. However, neither Dorothy nor Madolyn documented the purpose or importance of the donation, leaving later Historians to guess at its use. Specifically, per the example page displayed below, the notebook includes an, "Owner," "Dogs," "Description," "Acres," and dollar values column for various types of real and commercial property alphabetically by owner name. Occasional, "X," and frequent check-marks appear along the far left column next to each name apparently indicating whether the owner did or didn't comply with or do something. Page 3 of the PDF curiously includes the inscription, "Hudson River Institute," as well as some calculations apparently dating back to 1916. The right side of page 5 lists 1903 at the top followed by an apparent timeline of requirements for compilation and/or approval of the notebook. However, nothing definitively defines its public and/or private use for animal control or real property assessments. Please contact the Town Historian or Curator of SLHS if you can offer any additional information about the notebook. The PDF is downloadable while fully logged into the system. Refer to the example pages for a preview of its content. A much higher resolution PDF is stored off-line and available upon request under the file name:
