2021.2.59Scope and Content
One-hundred-and-ten (110) page PDF of a ledger that was once used by William Franklin Averill to record both his personal accounts from 1811 - 1827 on pages 1 through 13 and court cases as an elected Justice of the Peace of the Town of Sand Lake, NY, from 1832 - 1834 on page 14 through the end of the ledger. The court cases are thoroughly documented, but tightly handwritten in cramped and extremely difficult to read script. Per below, the optionally available high-resolution PDF of this ledger is somewhat easier to read, but even the original copy is challenging to read. Otherwise, the cases are very detailed and interesting. Many of the court pages include fill-in-the-blank appearance summons or judgment tickets that were once physically straight pinned or glued to their relevant case on a page. The tickets are individually photographed front and back (if needed) and included in the PDF and typically relate to a case on the previous page. Look for the straight pinholes or ticket shadows on the previous page to determine which of the up to several possible cases that the ticket(s) likely supported. Town of Sand Lake court cases prior to 1832 were recorded the, "1813-1849 TOSL Annual Meeting and Court Minutes," ledger which is also available in the Early Town Government folder of this system. However, the Averill cases seem to be far more varied and plentiful than those recorded in the 1813-1849 ledger. Per the weblinks portion of this entry, William F. Averill was the first Averill to reside in the Sand Lake area and also served as Town Clerk in 1825 and Supervisor in 1827 before passing away in 1839. Horatio F. and James K. Averill were his nephews and sons of his brother James G. Averill. Per the included donation letter, Robert Dalton Harris and Diane DeBlois purchased the ledger from Alice Tifft and graciously donated it to the Town along with a second William F. Averill-owned ledger. The PDF is downloadable while fully logged into the system. Refer to the example pages for a preview of its content. A much higher resolution PDF is stored off-line and available upon request under the file name:
