Description

Wood carving of a beaver purchased in 1939 for 0.25 cents

Context

The wood carving is approximately 6" long x 1-3/4" wide with a maximum height of 2-3/4" (top of ear). Fine details are included in the wood carving so that the entire body of the anima, thought to be a beaver, are visible. The material of the eyes is unknown, however in the 1930's, glass beads, ivory, bone, metal or painted wood were commonly used. Glass beads provided a reflective option. The eyes in the carving have a reflective appearance and are uniform in size. A note with the item indicates the carving was purchased for 0.25 cents in 1939.
