An inkwell is a container to hold ink to dip writing instruments such as a quill or pen into. Inkwells over time were made from clay, stone, animal horn, glass, porcelain, pewter, sterling silver and gold. Inkwells would often fit into a hole in a desk or table and usually included a lid to prevent spilling and to protect ink from evaporation. As fountain pens became popular in the 1800s and quills were less used, inkwells were used to refill the reservoirs in fountain pens with ink. Inkwells and fountain pens were less used with the invention of the typewriter and ballpoint pens later in 1943.Acquisition
