Crystal Ice & Service Station double sided sign and advertisementContext
In early years, businesses cut ice blocks from Marl Lake and Nottawasaga Bay in the winter to sell to locals and tourists to keep their food cold as refrigerators were not common then. Ice signs, such as this example, were used by customers when they needed ice. A "25 lbs" sign would be displayed in the window when a customer wanted a 25 pound block of ice delivered and a "50 lbs" sign would be displayed in the window when a customer wanted a 50 pound block of ice delivered. Crystal Ice & Service Station was located on River Road (Mosley Street) at Dixie Inn Road (24th Street) on the Nottawasaga River near the current location of the Car Wash and Wasaga Marine. Crystal Ice & Service Station sold & delivered "Manufactured Ice Government Tested For Your Protection". Daily delivery was available except for Sunday. The location also had a Shell service station, offered evinrude sales and service, Firestone tires and accessories, and a 24 hour towing service. Also on sight was "Oakview Boat Livery", selling live bait and fishing tackle and offering boat storage, docking and painting and water skis for sale or rent. Oakview Boat Livery eventually became Wasaga Marine.Acquisition
