The photograph, dated 1935, shows Earl Robinson, NHL hockey player, standing near a car with Pop’s Club in the background across the street. Bob Gracie’s Service Station was located a short distance down the street from this location on the beachfront at the base of Main Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario. Bob Gracie was also an NHL player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, including when they won the Stanley Cup in 1932.
Henry Earl Robinson, born March 11, 1907, in Montreal, Quebec, was a right winger who played eleven seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Maroons, Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens. He won the Stanley Cup with the Maroons in 1935. He played nine seasons with the Maroons, was then traded to the Chicago Black Hawks and returned to play for the Montreal Canadiens for the 1939-1940 season. He then played in the American Hockey League until his retirement in 1942. Earl passed away September 12, 1986, at the age of 79.
The photos contained in the Garvey collection were photographed and developed by Frank Garvey, Maple Leaf Film Service. Frank arrived in Wasaga Beach in 1929 and opened his photography business operating from two tents on the beachfront. In 2000, the collection was donated to the Archives by Judy Garvey.Acquisition
