Eberhardt's Double Sided Ice SignContext
Ice signs were used by customers when they needed ice. Signs were displayed in the window when a customer wanted either block of ice delivered. A "25 lbs" sign would be displayed in the window when a customer wanted a 25 pound block of ice delivered and a "50 lbs" sign would be displayed in the window when a customer wanted a 50 pound block of ice delivered. The Eberhardt family lived at 891 River Road West, at the corner of River Road West and Beck Street where Gough’s Landing is now located. There was a large barn behind the Eberhardt house where ice blocks were stored; covered with sawdust and woodchips. Ice blocks were cut from Marl Lake and Nottawasaga Bay in the winter to sell to locals and tourists to keep their food cold as refrigerators were not common then. The former Eberhardt property was converted into a 22-unit apartment complex, known as Gough's Landing, incorporating part of the original Eberhardt barn and home into the complex when it was built in 1987-1988.Acquisition
