Context

Margaret "Elaine" Hutchinson (Borthwick) was born in Fort Erie, Ontario on December 19, 1942 to Winnie and Art Hutchinson. The family eventually relocated to River Road East in Wasaga Beach where over time they built Dew-Laine Cottages. Elaine attended grade school in Wasaga Beach and high school at Collingwood Collegiate Institute in Collingwood, Ontario. After meeting at high school, Elaine married Walter Borthwick who went on to be the long time Mayor of Wasaga Beach. Besides raising a family of three daughters with Walter, Elaine was kept extremely busy helping with Walter’s family business and political career, as well as having her own career as a Dental Assistant. Elaine worked at the Stayner Medical Center for approximately 40 years. Elaine attended the Prince of Peace church from a very young age where her parents laid the cornerstone in 1951.Elaine and Walter married at the church, and Elaine had many roles and responsibilities within the church. Elaine was a member of the Probus Club and Honorary member of the Rotary Club and Kinnette Club of Wasaga Beach. Elaine's Grade 5 report card is from September, 1952 to June, 1953 when Elaine attended Wasaga Beach School, now the Town of Wasaga Beach Municipal Office. The report is divided into 3 terms, December, April and June. The teacher at the time was M. Downer and the Principal was L.V. Small. The report has two sections, Citizenship and Scholarship. Subjects graded are social studies, natural science, health, music, art, writing, spelling, reading, composition and grammar, literature and mathematics. The teacher has commented "Honors" on the report. The last page of the report includes documentation of Elaine's "PROMOTION" to Grade 6 signed by teacher, M. Downer. The printed blank report card was supplied by Jack Hood School Supplies, founded in Stratford, Ontario in 1939. Jack Hood School Supplies became a library book distributor in addition to a school supply company. In 1969, Jack Hood and Nor-Ed School Supplies in North Bay, Ontario were purchased by Harlequin Enterprises and became Scholar's Choice. Scholar's Choice is still operational with regional sales centers in Winnipeg, London and Moncton and is the oldest and largest distributor of educational toys, teaching materials and early childhood furniture in Canada.
