Copy of photograph of a Fokker - Universal plane # G-CAHH that landed at Wasaga Beach that was part of the Hudson Strait Expedition, 1927-28Context
The copy of the print was donated by John Hutchinson of the Hutchinson Family who owned and operated the Dyconia Resort, 1952-2008. John's parents, Margaret and Jack Hutchinson bought the Dyconia in 1952. The hotel was frequented by American tourists and Canadian cottage owners in the summer. In 1962, the Hutchinsons turned the Dyconia Hotel into a four-season resort when they renovated and opened a licensed restaurant called the Dinner Bell. Jack Hutchinson died in 1977 and his son, John, took over the business. Margaret continued to be hostess of the Dinner Bell dining room and to take hotel reservations. The Hutchinson's continued to operate the Dyconia until 2008. The Dyconia Villa was located at 381 Mosley Street where Dyconia Resort Hotel is still located today.
A note attached to an original photo confirms that the plane #G-CAHH Fokker-Universal (Model 4) was used in the Hudson Strait Expedition 1927-1928 and landed at Wasaga Beach.
From AirHistory.net:
"G-CAHH was one of the seven aircraft that took part in the 1927-28 Hudson Strait Expedition - six Universals and a Moth. The five remaining Universals assembled at Erik Cove at the end of the expedition to prepare to fly to Ottawa. G-CAHH crashed on take-off after a float strut failed. It was then decided to dismantle the aircraft and ship them out instead. G-CAHH was cancelled from the register after the accident."
The aircraft number G-CAHH can also be traced to Library and Archives Canada with information dating 1930-1933.
It is thought the original photograph was taken circa 1928-1930's.Acquisition
