Description

H.M Schooner Nancy 1789, by Nancy McGarvey, 2000

Context

The image of the HMS Nancy by Nancy McGarvey includes a detailed picture of the ship's sails. Included to the left of the image of the ship are details of the "Dimensions of Nancy's Spars", 1789. Spars are an essential part of a sailing vessels rigging acting as poles to support and control sails. The HMS Nancy was built at Windsor, Ontario in 1789 as a fur-trading vessel. The schooner was first employed for the North West Company. When the Americans declared war on Britain and the War of 1812 began, the British Navy requisitioned the vessel for duty. August 14, 1814 was the date it burned and sunk during an attack by the United States Navy in the Nottawasaga River, Wasaga Beach.
