Lead fish net weightContext
This item is a weight made from lead that was attached to the bottom of long fishing nets that were placed out into the Nottawasaga Bay by Reford Whiteside. The weight would be placed over the line of the net and then hammered closed at each end.
Reford Whiteside was a licensed plumber, commercial fisherman, dug wells and laid blocks. Jean Gordon of Sunnidale Township, married Reford Whiteside and moved to Wasaga Beach. Reford and Jean had two daughters, Isabel, who married Ross Hutchinson, and Ella who married Neil Edwards. Neil Edwards worked on the CPR ships out of Port McNicol and later had a bread route and worked at Goodyear circa 1967-1996. Alan Edwards, son of Ella and Neil Edwards, and great grandson of Reford and Jean Whiteside donated the Edward's Collection.
