Description

Mold to make lead fishing net weights

Context

This hand tool was used by Reford Whiteside to make fishing net weights. Lead was heated and then poured into the mold. This formed a weight that was attached to the bottom line of the nets to hold the net in place. Nets were placed out into the Nottawasaga Bay. Al Edwards, donor of the Edwards Collection, recalls fishing with his grandfather in the late 1960's. This item is a weight made from lead that was attached to the bottom of long fishing nets that were placed out into the Nottawasaga Bay by Reford Whiteside. Reford Whiteside was a licensed plumber, commercial fisherman, dug wells and laid blocks. Jean Gordon of Sunnidale Township, married Reford Whiteside and moved to Wasaga Beach. Reford and Jean had two daughters, Isabel, who married Ross Hutchinson, and Ella who married Neil Edwards. Neil Edwards worked on the CPR ships out of Port McNicol and later had a bread route and worked at Goodyear circa 1967-1996. Alan Edwards, son of Ella and Neil Edwards, and great grandson of Reford and Jean Whiteside donated the Edward's Collection. Reford’s parents, Alan's great grandparents, were Mary Margaret Moore of Allenwood Beach married to George Whiteside.
