Context

The Oakview Recreation Club was located at the bottom of Bay Street, now 22nd Street where the parking lot for the Ministry of Natural Resources office is located. The Oakview Recreation Club opened in the early 1930’s and operated until the late 1940’s. The Recreation Club offered bowling and billiards and operated a small grocery store and snack bar. Signs visible on the building indicate coal oil and Turret cigarettes could also be purchased. The photos contained in the Garvey collection were photographed and developed by Frank Garvey, Maple Leaf Film Service. Frank arrived in Wasaga Beach in 1929 and opened his photography business operating from two tents on the beachfront. In 2000, the collection was donated to the Archives by Judy Garvey.
