Context

The photo album contains classroom photos from S.S.#14 Sunnidale, 1936-1939, Wasaga Beach School, 1936 - 1971, Oxbow Park School, 1950's and 1960's, and a single classroom photo from the Van Vlack School. From information contained in the album: “ One of the original schools in Wasaga Beach was S.S. #14 Sunnidale, which was located above Eberhardt’s Store at n/w end of the Main Street Bridge. In the spring and fall, there were summer students who would attend classes for a month or so while their parents opened or closed their businesses and cottages. Some of the regular students did not start school until late September as they would be needed to help their parents with extra work. Most students walked to school, regardless of where they lived. The 1936 picture was taken outside on property across the street from the school in an open area near the school outhouses. It was a cold walk on a winter day to use the facilities! The 1939 picture was taken inside the classroom" "The property for the Wasaga Beach School, which is now the Town of Wasaga Beach Municipal Offices, was donated in 1937 by Anabel Sage Mills. The school was opened in 1939 and operated as a public school until it closed in 1972. Students were then sent to Oxbow Park School. The property was purchased by the Town of Wasaga Beach in 1973 and became the Municipal Office when Wasaga Beach was incorporated into a Town in 1974. Many additions have ben built since then, however the original cornerstone for the school still remains on site, as well as a plaque dedicated to Anabel Sage Mills. The Park on the site was originally known as Mills Park, containing swings, tennis and shuffleboard courts, and a baseball diamond. “Oxbow Park School was built in 1956, with many attending students transferring from the Wasaga Beach School. It is located on land backing onto both 39th and 40th Streets and has had several additions built since the 1960’s, including 6 classrooms, library, and enlarged gym and new administrative offices. Oxbow Park School twinned with Byrnes Avenue School from 1974-78, to enable the sharing of facilities. In 1979, the schools separated, only to be twinned again, with Oxbow Park School renamed Worsley Elementary school in 1994. The school is still thriving today with a fluctuating student population of over 500 students.”
