Context

S.S. (School Section) # 11 Nottawasaga, Buckingham Public School was a one-room red brick school house built in 1873 on the N ½ Lot #27 Concession 2, Nottawasaga Township. The land was donated by John Briggs, the owner at the time and Neil McEachern loaned the $1000 to build the school. Richard Fisher, who resided across the road, did most of the building and at the time the school was known as "Fisher's School". Later the school became known as the "Buckingham School" as it sat on 27/28 Side Road which after 1899 was known as Buckingham Sideroad due to the purchase of E 1/2 Lot 28, Concession 2 by the James Buckingham family. The school property was never deeded (as per Simcoe County Registry Office) however on June 26, 1964 the Public School Trustees for S.S. #11 Nottawasaga granted a transfer for the property for the sum of $1500 to Mr. & Mrs. Albert Stein of Nottawasaga who became owners of the 1.2 acres of land. The school closed at this time and area students were transported to Duntroon by bus the fall of 1964. Student monthly enrollment totals vary from 11 to 29 from 1949 to 1954.
