One album of a set of 4 albums of photos from the Tall Ships event held at Wasaga Beach in 1994Context
The album features "The Ceremony" aboard the "Pride of Michigan" on July 28, 1994 at the Tall Ships event in Wasaga Beach. The ceremony included the presentation of a cannonball by Mayor Walter Borthwick. The inscription on the base holding the cannonball reads: "This thirty-two pound shot was presented in peace and friendship to the crew of the US Brig Niagara from the people of Schoonertown, Upper Canada, now know as Wasaga Beach, Ontario, at the site of her 1814 Battle with the HMS Nancy." The historical row boat, "Niagara", is shown arriving alongside the Pride of Michigan.
From Simcoe.com: "You may recall that the HMS Nancy was hit by cannonballs from ships in the bay firing across our shores onto the little ship hidden in the Nottawasaga River. The 1994 tall ships sail past commemorated that event 180 years later."
"It was one of our fabulous summer days with full sunshine. Those dressed in period costumes and woollen uniforms will remember how warm they felt when crossing the bay under the hot sun to meet the ships. We had a small vessel full of dignitaries heading out to meet them, complete with Mayor Walter Borthwick dressed in full uniform. They were on their way to meet the captain of the U.S Brig Niagara, to return a 32-pound shot or cannonball, which had been fired on the Nancy and later found in the river’s sand bottom", written by Mary Watson, Town Archivist.
