Description

Wool bathing suit, circa 1930's-1940's

Context

The vintage black wool bathing suit is one piece with shoulder straps, a tie at the waist and an apron front with wool shorts under it. The wool shoulder straps have an anchor shaped stainless steel hook attached to each strap. The shoulder strap with the anchor/hook goes over the shoulder and through a loop attached to the bathing suit. The hooks and eyes/loops will allow individuals to put on or take off the garment. There are wool knit straps attached to the back of the bathing suit that tie around the waist. The chest area and rear section of the garment are lined with jersey material. Wool was used in bathing suits as it provided modesty that was an expectation of the era, however the heavy weight and sagging of wool bathing suits when wet made them impractical.
