Dupatta

Name/Title

Dupatta

Entry/Object ID

2023.3.139

Description

Shoulder wrap. This piece is a very rare example of the type of scarf wealthy women wore in the mid-1800s. The gold content of the supplementary warp is considered far greater than the more modern pieces of this type which were popular later on. Today the same type of dupatta is still in fashion (with plastic metallic yarn as supplemental warp). It was a gift from the Maharani of Wakaneer, who showed it to Vickie Elson during a discussion about the old style of wedding clothing. She took it out and bemoaned the fact that when she died her son's wives would melt it down. Elson said she loved it, and was given the dupatta.
