Tube Skirt (Tenapi Matang Karing)Entry/Object ID
2024.1.6Description
Tenapi Matang Karing means a tube skirt with "small eyes" patterns. This garment is worn by members of the Suku Uma Aring (Younger/Youngest Brother) patrilineage, part of the Alurung ethnic group from the Umapura Village on Ternate Island, Alor Regency. Tenapi Matang Karing consists of two panels of warp ikat decorated cloths. The ground color is traditionally dyed with morinda, producing a brown-red color. Each panel features a primary warp ikat band and many secondary bands. The primary bands are located near the top or the bottom of the skirt. The secondary bands are adorned with various patterns, such as coconut tree fronds (lolong), boats (tena), and undulating lines (kago no eking). There are also many warp ikat dashes called little flowers (peku-peku) or broken bettle nut fruit (malu gilu). The skirt often includes bright stripes of commercially dyed purple and pink, which divide the ikat bands.Acquisition
