1860 Norwegian Bent Wood BoxContext
This Norwegian Bent Wood sewing box was used by Mari Swenson (Mrs. Knud Swenson). Mari Hansdatter-Solum was born on 26 May 1836 in the Eggedal Parish of Norway. Knud Tovsrud was born on 7 April 1834 in the Eggedal Parish. Mari and Knud married in the Eggedal Kirke on 25 March 1859. Knud and Mari Tovsrud immigrated to America in 1861and settled on a farm near Spring Grove, Minnesota. In Norway and in Minnesota, Knud and Mari used the family name Tovsrud. When Knud's father, Svend, died in 1881, Knud began using the family name Swenson, because following Norwegian tradition, he was Svend's son. In the Spring of 1885, Knud and Mari Swenson followed their daughters, Liva (Mrs. Ole I. Hanson) and Maren (Mrs. Ole H. Baglien) to Traill County, North Dakota, where the two Ole’s had homesteaded in Eldorado Township near Hillsboro. Knud and Mari Swenson, and children, including my great grandmother, Ingeborg Swenson, settled on a farm in Norway Township. In about 1905, Knud and Mari retired from farming and moved into the City of Hillsboro. My great great grandparents, Knud and Mari Swenson, both died in 1916 and are buried in Hillsboro's Riverside Cemetery. Jack LudwigCataloged By
