Description

Mari (Hansdatter-Solum) Swenson (Mrs. Knud Swenson) brought this Norwegian wooden box with her to America in 1861. Although her life is described elsewhere (see Catalogit entry 2022-658.1), briefly Mari Hansdatter-Solum was born on 26 May 1836 in the Eggedal Parish of Norway. On 25 March 1859, Mari married Knud Tovsrud in the Eggedal Kirke. Knud and Mari Tovsrud came to America in 1861and first settled on a farm near Spring Grove, Minnesota. In Norway and in Minnesota, Knud and Mari used the family name Tovsrud. When Knud's father, Svend, died in 1881, Knud began using the family name Swenson, because he was Svend's son. In the Spring of 1885, Knud and Mari Swenson came to Traill County and settled on a farm in Norway Township. They retired from farming in about 1905 and moved into the City of Hillsboro. My great great grandparents, Knud and Mari Swenson, both died in 1916 and are buried in Hillsboro's Riverside Cemetery. Jack Ludwig
