The family came from Gulbransdalen, Norway. For 13 weeks their sailing vessel was at the mercy of the elements. Many burials were made at sea, but the Baglien family survived and settled near Spring Grove in Houston County, Minnesota in 1871. They joined a caravan of 16 covered wagons going into the unknown west, which was Dakota Territory.
Interesting notes:
Hans came to Minnesota and farmed in Section 16, Oscar Township, Ottertail County, near Fergus Falls in the 1860's and was the one to get the family to the U.S.
John was one of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the U.S. Volunteer Cavalry.
Annie had a hat & dress shop in Hillsboro and was also a tailor.
Ole H. Baglien homesteaded in what is now Eldorado Township by the time of the 1880 US Census. On 5 December 1881, Ole H. Baglien married Maren Swenson-Tovsrud in Quincy, Dakota Territory. Maren was a sister to Liva (Swenson-Tovsrud) Hanson, wife of Ole I. Hanson, who had also homesteaded in Eldorado Township near Hillsboro. Liva and Maren's parents were Knud and Mari (Hansdatter-Solum) Swenson, who in 1885 moved from Spring Grove, MN, to homestead in Norway Township in Traill County, DT (ND). Knud and Mari Swenson are great great grandparents to Kay (Ludwig) Rotvold and Jack Ludwig, of Hillsboro.Cataloged By
