This family history file folder on Norman Kenneth Hagen [photo, left], includes images and documents. Norman was the son of John and Hannah (Larson) Hagen, who were life-long residents of Hillsboro in Traill County, ND [see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.25.1]. Norman's life is briefly described below, largely from information kindly provided by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner in her Public Member Tree in Ancestry.com: Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree. Norman Hagen was Jackie's great great uncle.
Norman Kenneth Hagen was born on 21 September 1912 in Hillsboro in Traill County, ND. He was raised in the family home on Sargent St. and went to school in town. In the 1920 US Census for the City of Hillsboro, Norman was 7 years old. His father worked as a house painter. At the time of the 1930 US Census was taken on 1 April in the City of Hillsboro, Norman was 17 years old, although the census recorded his age as 18, perhaps because Norman was employed as a "Delivery boy" of "Groceries" in the 1930 census.
In the 1940 US Census, Norman was 27 years old, and his employment was reported as a "Painter" in "Own business". Apparently, Norman had taken over his father John Hagen's house painting business, who by 1940 had retired.
On 10 February 1941, Norman enlisted in the US Army--the 164th infantry unit of Company L in the National Guard in Hillsboro. Norman served in WWII in the Pacific Theatre. Norman was discharged from the US Army on 10 October 1945 [US Headstone Appl.].
In the 1950 US Census, Norman was 37 years old and resided on Main St in Hillsboro with his parents and his brother Orlin. In this 1950 census, no employment was recorded for Norman, nor for his brother Orlin. His parents, John, 77, and Hannah, 69, were retired.
In 1954, a family photograph was taken of Norman with his parents, John and Hannah Hagen, and his brother Orlen and sisters Amy, Bernice, Hazel and Lila [family photo, below]
As written on page 85 in the 1976 Traill County History book 'Yesteryears' [below], Norman Kenneth Hagen "lived all his life in Hillsboro", where he worked as "an interior decorator and painter." Norman also served in WWII with the 164th Infantry of the US National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW in Hillsboro. Norman also served in Hillsboro's Fire Department.
Norman Kenneth Hagen died, age 51, on 17 June 1964. After funeral services were held at the Halverson Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsboro [obit, below], Norman was interred in Riverside Cemetery in Hillsboro [grave-marker photo, below].Acquisition
