This family history folder describes the life of Peter Beitz, who farmed from 1920 to 1929 in Herberg Township in Traill County, North Dakota. Peter Beitz was born on 12 July 1867 in Chicago, IL, the second of ten children born to Adam and Julia (Burg) Beitz (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2022.268.1, and Beitz_Genealogy.pdf*, pages 2 & 4, below). Peter was raised in the Chicago area until the age of 12 when in 1880 his parent's bought farmland near Bridgewater in Jackson Township in Adair County, Iowa. Peter Beitz, along with brothers Henry, Jake Joseph, and John, helped his father Adam Beitz farm work. When Adam died in 1907, Peter, brothers Henry and John, and sister Julia, continued farming operations [1910 & 1920 US Census data]. By 1920, Peter's brothers Joseph and Jake their own farming operations. Joseph had married and moved to Traill County (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2025.238.1). Jake married and stayed in Jackson Township in Adair County, IA, and died there in 1951 [IA Death Certif. data]. Later in 1920, Peter, Henry and Julia sold the home farm and bought land five miles east of Hillsboro in Traill County, ND. Peter and brother Henry bought 160 acres of farmland in the NW Qtr. of Sect. 6 in Herberg Township [1927 map, below]. Peter, Henry and Julia's farm was located next to the Joseph Beitz farm, their brother (see TCHS Catalogit family history entry 2025.238.1; 1925 ND Traill County Census data). On 9 March 1929, Peter Beitz passed away, age 61, of cancer (see obituary, Hillsboro Banner, 15 Mar. 1929, left). After funeral services held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Henry was interred at the Catholic Calvary Cemetery by Hillsboro [photo of grave-maker, below]. With Peter's passing, his siblings thanked neighbors and friends for their comfort over their brother's death (see Card of Thanks, Hillsboro Banner, 15 Mar. 1929, below). _________________________ *a Beitz_Genealogy.pdf document was compiled and written by Karen (Fleischer) Ackerman and kindly proved to the TCHS by Karen's granddaughter Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner.
