Description

This family history folder describes the life of Mathilda (Tillie) Luise Fleischer, who was the daughter of CW and Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer. CW and Ernestina were 1879 pioneers in Bohnsack Township, Traill County, DT [see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.12.1, and profiles in a Ackerman/Kneip/Fleischer/Hagen Family Tree, an Ancestry.com Public Member Tree created by Jackie (Ausk) Baumgartner]. Tillie Fleischer was born on 12 June 1872 in Beaver Falls in Minnesota [obit info, left]. Her father, CW Fleischer, operated a mill along the Minnesota River in nearby Redwood Falls, MN. Then at age 6 in 1879, Tillie Fleischer moved with her family to a homestead in Bohnsack Township located on land her father, CW Fleischer, had claimed in 1878. The Fleischer homestead was located in the North-half of Section 26 (see Mrs. E. Fleischer land in 1892 plat map, below). Also, by 1892, Tillie's older brother, Wm Fleischer had claimed land near the Fleischer homestead. Tillie Fleischer was 8 years old in the 1880 US Census for Traill County and 27 years old in the 1900 US Census taken in Bohnsack Township. In the 1900 census, Tillie was recorded as a "House worker" on the family farm, with Tillie's mother, Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer recorded as "Head" of household and "Farmer". Ernestina was head of household because her husband CW Fleischer had gone to Helena, Montana, in about 1883 to mine gold (see TCHS Catalogit Family History entry 2025.12.1). In 1900, Tillies brother George, age 25, and sister Clara, age 31, were also listed, along with two farm workers. Tillie Fleischer was age 42 in the 1915 ND Census for Traill County. Tillie's brother, George, age 40, was now recorded as head of the household. In 1915, Tillie's mother, Ernestina, age 76, was in the household along with three farm workers. Tillie Fleischer was 47 in the 1920 US Census for Bohnsack Township, collected on 22 January. Tillie's brother, George Fleischer, age 45, was head of household. Tillie and George's mother, Ernestina, age 81, was listed in the household in 1920, but there were no farm laborers listed. Tillie Fleischer was 58 in the 1930 US Census for Bohnsack Township. George, 56, continued to operate the Fleischer home farm with Tillie's help, but their mother, Ernestina (Bohnsack) Fleischer, had passed away on 1 August 1926 at age 87. Tillie, 67, and George, 65, continued to farm the Fleischer home farm in the 1940 US Census for Bohnsack Township, and continued to do so when the 1950 US Census was taken for 15 April. In 1950, Tillie was 77 and George was 75. In 1950, their widowed sister, Clara (Fleischer) McNeilly, was also with them on the home farm. From a 1952 Atlas plat map [below], we know that Tillie and George owned the Fleischer homestead in the NE Qtr. of Sect. 26. Tillie Fleischer passed away, age 84 on 17 May 1957 at the home farm in Bohnsack Township [ND Death Certificate, below]. After a funeral service held at Grandin, ND [obit info], Mathilda (Tillie) was interred in Hillsboro's Cemetery [US FaG grave-marker, below].
